CLAMPING UNIT

INJECTION UNIT

Before injection starts—and during the injection and holding stages—the mold must remain tightly closed to withstand the high pressure of the molten plastic. This is the role of the clamping unit, one of the injection molding machine’s most critical components. The clamping unit uses hydraulic cylinders or electric motors to apply a force (measured in tons) that keeps the mold halves pressed together. The required clamping force depends on the size of the mold and the injection pressure: for example, a small mold for electronic connectors may need 100–300 tons of clamping force, while a large mold for automotive bumpers requires 800–1,700 tons.
After the mold is filled, the machine enters the holding stage. During this phase, the screw maintains a lower pressure (called “holding pressure”) on the molten plastic for a short period (usually a few seconds to a minute). This pressure compensates for the shrinkage that occurs as the plastic cools—ensuring the mold cavity remains full and the product retains its intended shape and dimensions. Without holding pressure, the plastic would shrink away from the mold walls, resulting in warped or incomplete parts.
